> What each poker chip color is worth, how many chips every player gets and a chip calculator for your own set. With tables for 4, 6, 8 and 10 players.

There is no fixed value for each color, you agree on it before the game. In many casinos red is worth 5, green 25 and black 100. For a home game we suggest: **white 5, red 10, green 25, black 100.** Everyone gets 36 chips worth 1,000, and the blinds start at 5 and 10.

With this split you need 144 chips for four players, 216 for six, 288 for eight and 360 for ten. A set of 300 chips is enough for up to eight players, as long as it has enough of each color.

## Chip calculator for your set

The calculator is free and runs in your browser, no account needed. Enter how many people are playing, the starting stack you want and how many chips of each color are in your case. It shows how many chips everyone gets, which blinds you start with and what is left over.

The chip calculator runs on the page in your browser: enter the number of players, the starting stack and the chips in your case, and it shows how many chips of each color every player gets.

Example: 6 players, a case with 300 chips (60 each of white, red, green, blue and black), starting stack 1,000:

| Color | Value | Chips per player |
| --- | --- | --- |
| White | 5 | 10 |
| Red | 10 | 10 |
| Green | 25 | 8 |
| Blue | 50 | 7 |
| Black | 100 | 3 |

In total 38 chips worth 1,000, starting blinds 5 / 10.

How it works: every stack is worth exactly the starting stack, and each color stays as close to ten chips per player as it can, like our suggestion below. Everyone gets enough small chips to pay the first blinds without making change. If your chips don't work out, the calculator tells you why. Once you have your blinds, the [tournament clock](https://flopnight.com/en/poker-tournament-clock/) runs them for you.

## What each color is worth

| Color | Value | Chips per player | Total |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| White | 5 | 10 | 50 |
| Red | 10 | 10 | 100 |
| Green | 25 | 10 | 250 |
| Black | 100 | 6 | 600 |
| Total | | 36 | 1,000 |

White and red pay the first **blinds**, the forced bets at the start of every hand, without making change. You need green and black once the blinds go up, otherwise the table soon fills up with piles of small chips. Green 25 and black 100 are the same as in the casino, so nobody has to get used to something new.

If your set has other colors, use the lightest for the smallest value and the darkest for the largest. What matters is that everyone at the table knows the values. Write them on a piece of paper and put it in the middle.

## How many chips for how many players

| Game | White (5) | Red (10) | Green (25) | Black (100) | Chips |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 4 players | 40 | 40 | 40 | 24 | 144 |
| 6 players | 60 | 60 | 60 | 36 | 216 |
| 8 players | 80 | 80 | 80 | 48 | 288 |
| 10 players | 100 | 100 | 100 | 60 | 360 |

If you are short on one color, hand out fewer of those and more of the next higher one. Two fewer white chips and one more red chip add up to the same amount. If your set has a fifth color, keep it aside as a reserve or give it a value of 50.

## Starting stack: how much does everyone get?

We count 1,000 per player. With blinds of 5 and 10 that is 100 **big blinds**, a hundred times the bigger forced bet. Everyone can lose a few hands without having to bet everything right away.

How fast the blinds go up decides how long the night lasts. A ready-made table with 20 minutes per level is on our [poker night](https://flopnight.com/en/poker-night/) page. Who posts the small blind and the big blind is in the [poker rules](https://flopnight.com/en/texas-holdem-rules/#dealer-button-and-blinds).

## Coloring up

Once the blinds reach 25 and 50, you no longer need the white and red chips. Swap them for green ones at the first break. That is called coloring up, or a color-up in tournaments. Two red chips and one white chip, for example, become one green chip.

If someone has less than 25 left over, we suggest rounding up: whoever has 15 left gets a green chip. In a tournament under the TDA rules, leftover chips are raced off instead. At the kitchen table, rounding up is simpler, and nobody loses chips.

## Finding the right set

Look less at the total number and more at the chips per color. If 300 chips are spread evenly over five colors, that is 60 per color. By our table that is enough for six players. If the split is not in the description, ask the seller.

Once the chips are sorted, check which hand wins what. The [poker hand rankings](https://flopnight.com/en/poker-hand-rankings/) list all ten hands in order.

## Questions and answers

**What are the values of the poker chip colors?**

There is no fixed value, you agree on it before the game. In many casinos red is worth 5, green 25 and black 100. For a home game we suggest white 5, red 10, green 25 and black 100.

**How many poker chips do you need for 6 players?**

With our split, 216: 60 each of white, red and green, plus 36 black. Everyone gets 36 chips worth 1,000.

**Is a set of 300 poker chips enough?**

For up to eight players, yes, as long as the set has enough of each color: 80 white, 80 red, 80 green and 48 black. For ten players you need 360 chips, so a set of 500.

**How many chips does each player get?**

With our split, 36 chips worth 1,000: 10 white at 5, 10 red at 10, 10 green at 25 and 6 black at 100. That is 100 big blinds if you start with blinds of 5 and 10.

**How do I split poker chips for 5, 7 or 9 players?**

With the chip calculator on this page. Enter the number of players, the starting stack and the chips in your set. It shows how many chips of each color everyone gets and what stays in the case.

**My set has different colors. What now?**

Use one row of the chip calculator per color and set the value you give that color. For the math only the count and the value matter, not the color.
